Overview:This is an exceptional, investment-grade piece of German Arts & Crafts metalwork handcrafted by the renowned artist Hugo Berger under his celebrated brand moniker, Goberg. This heavy, industrial-chic box showcases Berger's iconic Medieval Revival styling, complete with a densely dimpled hand-hammered texture, substantial structural corner rivets, and an oversized romantic heart-shaped escutcheon lock plate that still retains its original operational key.The underside features the crisp, authentic maker stamp: the traditional "HB" inside a heraldic shield alongside the crisp "GERMANY" geographic export mark.
Likely Historical Uses & Functions:
Because this premium variant features an integrated, high-grade aromatic cedar wood interior lining, it was originally designed and marketed for specific luxury utility purposes at the turn of the 20th century:
Desktop Cigar Humidor or Tobacco Caddy: Turn-of-the-century metal shops frequently lined iron boxes with Spanish cedar specifically to store loose tobacco, pipes, or fine cigars. The porous, fragrant wood lining safely regulated internal humidity, prevented condensation or rust from forming inside the iron frame, and warded off destructive tobacco beetles.Valuables & Documents Strongbox: Given the heavy-duty iron build and the lock-and-key design, these boxes served as personal desk safes for securing private letters, deeds, ledgers, and family inheritance documents from pests or wandering eyes.Luxury Dresser Jewelry Casket: High-end retailers of the era (most notably Liberty of London, who imported Goberg pieces directly to the UK market) sold these boxes as sophisticated vanity table caskets. The cedar core kept precious family metalware and early jewelry secure, dry, and protected from premature tarnish.
Condition Notes: Excellent, immaculate antique condition. The iron body is incredibly solid with a rich, uniform, darkly aged charcoal patina. The underside of lid has (white) defects and some rust is on the right side of box. All pictured.
The hinges move but are stiff. The key is included. The heart lock mechanisms does not lock or unlock properly with regularity.
The interior cedar lining is remarkably intact with no heavy rot, splits, or structural warping.
