Offered is a scarce matched pair of antique Edward Carter 7/8\" tongue-and-groove match planes, manufactured in Troy, New York during the second half of the 19th century.
Both planes are clearly stamped:
EDWARD CARTER
TROY – N.Y.
Both are also individually marked 7/8, confirming their corresponding size.
These are complementary woodworking planes designed to be used as a pair: one cuts the tongue and the other cuts the matching groove. They feature shaped wooden handles, original-style wooden wedges and irons, and extensive steel-plated fences/working surfaces designed to resist wear.
Edward Carter is a documented Troy, New York plane maker whose planes bearing his individual imprint date approximately 1854–1897.
This is a particularly desirable configuration because the original complementary planes have remained together as a matching 7/8\" set.
Both planes remain in authentic antique condition and show substantial evidence of age and workshop use. The wooden bodies have scratches, staining, handling wear, edge wear and aged patina. The steel components show oxidation, discoloration and surface wear. One of the rear handle horns has an old chip/loss, clearly visible in the photographs.
The planes have not been restored, refinished or aggressively cleaned. The cutters have not been sharpened or adjusted by me, and I have not tested the pair on wood. They are therefore being offered as collectible antique woodworking tools rather than guaranteed ready-to-use planes.
Both Edward Carter planes shown are included and are being sold together as one matched set.
Please examine all photographs closely for construction, markings and condition. The photographs show the actual pair you will receive.
