A traditional \"Good Luck\" horseshoe framing a standard U.S. Shield (hand-painted with a 13-star flag design). This sits directly above the five-pointed G.A.R. membership star, flanked at the bottom by the organization\'s initials: G.A.R. The entire piece is crowned by a spread-wing eagle perched atop a decorative bar. The reverse reveals its maker\'s mark: \"DESIGN PAT APPLD FOR BY C. L. HOAG.\" C.L. Hoag was a respected designer of finely cast novelty horseshoe plaques, which were originally finished with a bright gold wash/gilt accent over a cast iron or white metal base.
