This exceptional 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon depicts the beloved theme of "Joy of All Who Sorrow" (Vsekh Skorbyashchikh Radost). In the center stands the Virgin Mary in a mandorla of light, acting as a celestial intercessor. She is surrounded by angels and common people suffering from various afflictions—the sick, the cold, and the hungry—who seek her protection. Above her, Christ is shown in the clouds, blessing the scene.
Technical Details & Construction
• Age: Circa mid-to-late 19th Century.
• Medium: Hand-painted egg tempera on a gessoed wood panel with gold leaf accents.
• Panel Features: This is a traditional heavy wood panel featuring a Kovcheg (recessed central field). The back retains its two original Sponki (transverse slats), which have protected the wood from significant warping over the last century.
• Dimensions: Approximately 12" x 10" (31 cm x 26 cm).
Condition Report
This icon is in very good antique condition, showing a beautiful, authentic aged character:
• Surface: The paint layer is stable with a fine craquelure and a deep, naturally darkened varnish (patina) that enhances its historical feel.
• Wear: Expected minor surface abrasions and small areas of pigment loss consistent with age and devotional use. There is some softening of the facial details on the smaller peripheral figures.
• Structure: The wood panel is solid and heavy. The back shows some evidence of historical insect activity (now dormant/treated), which is standard for icons of this age.
