Beautiful antique blue and white cotton quilt, approximately 58" x 66", featuring a striking geometric pattern in the Snowball / Rob Peter to Pay Paul family.
The quilt is hand quilted, with the individual quilting stitches readily visible throughout. The top appears to be machine pieced. Based on its fabrics, construction, quilting and overall characteristics, this quilt is believed to date to the late 19th century, approximately 1880–1900. It is unsigned and its exact maker, place of origin and date are unknown.
The design is especially appealing: solid blue against a true white ground creates a bold geometric pattern that still looks remarkably fresh and graphic today. The reverse is white and beautifully displays the hand-quilted pattern.
This is a genuine old textile that has been used and loved. It shows substantial evidence of its age, including scattered stains and discoloration, spotting, worn/frayed areas along the binding and edges, loose/broken stitches and other textile wear. I have photographed the quilt extensively so its condition can be evaluated before purchase.
