Rare Antique 1923 Ridgways Red Transferware Passover Seder Plate – Bardiger & Tepper, London
Up for sale is a highly collectible and historically significant piece of Anglo-Jewish history: an authentic Judaica Passover Seder plate,manufactured in 1923 by the renowned Ridgways pottery of Hanley, Staffordshire, England. This rare variant was custom commissioned and retailed by prominent London merchants Solomon Bardiger and Max Tepper.
Design & Significance
Unlike more common variations, this plate showcases a striking red transferware layout.
- The Center: Features dedicated spaces for the symbolic Seder items (including Maror, Chazeret, Charoset, and Karpas) surrounded by intricate floral vine work with a ram at the top.
- The Rim: Displays the structural steps of the Passover Seder ritual (Kadesh, Urchatz, Karpas, Yachatz...) complete with bilingual Hebrew text and English translations ("Sanctification", "Wash the hands", "The parsley").
- The Reverse: Deeply stamped on the back with the crisp red maker's mark detailing both London retailers and the official British Design Registration Number 699855.
Identical configurations from this landmark 1920s Ridgways commission are preserved in institutional museum archives, including the Jewish Museum London and the Jewish Museum of Maryland.
