Large magnificent, museum-quality piece of early American sports history: an original 1902 St. Andrew's Golf Club (S.A.G.C.) Presentation Trophy Flagon.
Established in 1888, St. Andrew's is famously recognized as the oldest continuously operating golf club in the United States and a founding member of the USGA. This rare 124-year-old artifact dates directly to the club's historic Gilded Age era at Mount Hope in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York.
INSCRIPTION DETAILS:
The front of the vessel features a beautifully executed, bright-cut zig-zag engraving that reads:
"S.A.G.C.
Election Day Handicap
1st Prize
1902"
The Election Day Handicap was one of the club's premier autumn tournaments, drawing highly competitive fields from New York's elite
DESIGN & HALLMARKS:
Standing at an impressive and commanding 15 inches tall, this heavy pewter flagon features a multi-stepped lid, a robust strap handle, and an elegant shell/scallop-shaped thumbpiece. The underside of the base is stamped with a series of four classic European pseudo-hallmarks (including a crescent moon, a greek cross, and letters), indicating the high-quality blank hollowware was imported from a premier German or Scandinavian pewter workshop before being custom engraved by a New York jeweler.
CONDITION:
Excellent antique condition. The pewter retains a stunning, deep-gray historical patina. The lid hinge mechanism is completely intact, smooth, and functional. No major dents or structural damage—only minor, age-appropriate surface wear that beautifully validates its age. Please review the photos for close-up details.
DIMENSIONS:
• Height: 15" to top of finial
• Base Diameter: Approx. 7"
• Mouth Rim: Approx. 5"
