History blurb
Chartered in 1638 as the Military Company of Massachusetts, the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company was created to train colonial militia officers. It is recognized as the oldest chartered military organization in the Western Hemisphere. The company has long been associated with Faneuil Hall, where its headquarters and museum preserve military artifacts, portraits, flags, and the painting The First Muster, commemorating its original gathering on Boston Common.
