We are pleased to offer from a Prominent North Dakota Collector's Estate, the second in an assorted Collection of ANTIQUE ORIGINAL OROTONE PHOTOGRAPHS. This Collection was acquired by its Owner over a period of thirty years. It features mostly landscape images. It dates from mostly the 1900-1925 period.
The Orotone offered in this Lot is a Very Nice " ANTIQUE OROTONE TITLED " MOONLIGHT ON THE LAKE " BY ARTHUR PILLSBURY ". " It Measures 9" x 6 1/2". The Overall Measurement , including the frame is 7 1/8" x 9 3/4". Although NOT SIGNED , through our research, we are quite certain this is the above-mentioned titled Work of Arthur Pillsbury. He was prolific in photographing sites in Northern California in the early 1900s-1920's. He lived from 1870-1946. Although the specific location of THIS photograph is not certain, it is believed to have been taken in the Sierra Nevada or Yosemite region of California between 1900-1910.
As collectors of orotones know, many were only signed by labels attached to back papers. This particular Orotone, at some point had a back paper replacement. Pillsbury marked his Orotone backpapers with a Red Stamp. Unfortunately, with the replaced back paper that stamp mark no longer is attached to this Work.
We believe the Pillsbury Orotone offered here was prodiuced betwween 1900-1910..
CONDITION: After Careful Examintaion, we find No Visible Scratches to the Exterior Glass, and No Losses or Fading to the Emulsion Backed processing on the interior of the Orotone. This is in Overall Exceptionally Nice Almost Pristine Condition. The orotone having likely been framed since it was produced accounts for its Near Mint Preservation.
The Hand Painted Wood Frame shows Some Paint Wear here and there , especially near the corners, as expected. The Original Back paper at some point was replaced. The corners of the frame appear solid and secure. We believe at some point this was a Replaced Frame for this Orotone photograph. Others in the Collection are framed similarly, so it is likely the Collector desired matching frames at some point for the collection.
