"Stultz Day" was held in Middletown, Pennsylvania, on July 28, 1928, to honor aviator Wilmer Lower "Bill" Stultz following his historic trans-Atlantic flight. In June 1928, Stultz piloted the Fokker F.VIIb/3m seaplane named the Friendship from Newfoundland to Wales, famously carrying Amelia Earhart (making her the first woman to cross the Atlantic by air) and flight mechanic Louis Gordon.Because Stultz had married Mildred Botts of Middletown in 1919, the residents of the town claimed him as their "hometown hero". To celebrate his landmark aviation achievement, Middletown organized a massive community homecoming celebration. Earhart and Gordon both joined the residents of Middletown for the special event, which featured a commemorative airmail flight flown by Gordon.
