Immediately south of the street lay the city commons and defense palisades, separating the town from the surrounding forest and burial grounds. It was named South Broad Street at settlement, briefly called Market Street in the 1820s, renamed South Broad, and officially changed to Oglethorpe Avenue in April 1897.
