Two antique family photograph albums formerly owned by Ethel Rausch Hyre, (Centerville, In) containing photographs associated with two families, along with genealogy notes, handwritten material, and newspaper clippings.48 photographs total:* Smaller album: 18 photographs, including cartes de visite (CDVs) and tintypes.
* Larger album: 30 photographs, including cabinet cards and CDVs.The portraits feature men, women, couples, children, and babies, with period clothing and decorative studio mounts. The photographs appear to date primarily from the later 1800s into the early 1900s.Many photographs have handwritten names or identification notes on the reverse, although not all are identified. These inscriptions and accompanying papers offer useful clues for family-history research. Individual portrait identities have not been independently verified.Included is a newspaper article about Ethel from a Centerville, Indiana, newspaper, dating to the mid-1990s, as well as a typed family-history sheet dated January 22, 1996. The sheet names Ethel Rausch Hyre and records information about her Rausch grandparents and their children.The smaller album has a decorative geometric cover. The larger album features an embossed floral cover, gilt page edges, and interior pages decorated with gold-colored botanical designs.Condition:
Both albums show substantial age and handling wear, including scuffing, rubbing, worn corners and edges, and wear to the spines and hinges.The smaller album remains bound, despite exterior wear. The larger album’s back cover is completely separated but included.Interior pages exhibit age toning, spotting, staining, and tears around some photograph openings and insertion slots. Some openings are empty, and several photographs are loose or tucked between pages. Photograph condition varies, with some fading, spotting, and wear to mounts. At least one photographic mount has a missing section. Accompanying papers show folds, discoloration, and edge wear.An appealing collection for antique photography collectors and researchers interested in Indiana family history and the families represented.Sold together in as-found condition.
