Original vintage 35mm color transparency showing the Old Cathedral (Basilica of Saint Louis, King of France) with the Gateway Arch rising dramatically behind it in St. Louis, Missouri.
Photographed in November 1978, this period view captures the historic church almost perfectly framed beneath the Gateway Arch. The photograph also preserves late-1970s street details, traffic signals, automobiles and the surrounding downtown environment.
The original slide mount is handwritten “ST. LOUIS CATHEDRAL / ST. LOUIS MO.” and stamped NOV 78H.
The juxtaposition of the historic Old Cathedral with the much newer Gateway Arch makes this an especially attractive architectural and historical image of St. Louis.
