1945 World War II "The Wreckage Of Iwo Jima" PSA Type 1 Original Photo:
$1285.00

For Sale is an Awesome 1945 WWII PSA Type 1 Original Photo! This powerful 1945 Type I original photograph captures the destruction along the beaches of Iwo Jima during one of the fiercest battles of World War II. Across the island’s dark volcanic terrain lie the twisted remains of vehicles and military equipment, with spent shell casings scattered prominently across the foreground as U.S. Marines move through the devastated beachhead in the distance. The handwritten period caption preserved on the reverse identifies the central wreckage as the remains of an amphibious truck that struck a land mine on the Iwo beachhead, noting that its cargo of ammunition added tremendously to the intensity of the resulting explosion. The reverse also retains multiple Brown Brothers credit and loan stamps, while the photograph itself has been authenticated and encapsulated by PSA as a Type I original photograph.

The destruction seen here illustrates the extraordinary conditions American forces encountered after landing on February 19, 1945. Iwo Jima’s steep terraces of loose black volcanic sand made movement exceptionally difficult, bogging down vehicles and creating dangerous concentrations of men, equipment, and supplies as Japanese artillery and mortar fire struck the beaches. Mines presented another threat as Marines pushed away from the shoreline, while amphibious trucks and tractors were essential for moving artillery, ammunition, and supplies across the difficult terrain. The Battle of Iwo Jima would continue until late March 1945 and become one of the most costly and deeply remembered campaigns in Marine Corps history.

The Shot is 8x10in and is Authenticated and Encapsulated by PSA as a Type 1 Original Photo, there are some condition issues and creases along the photo. While the flag raising atop Mount Suribachi became the enduring symbol of Iwo Jima, photographs like this preserve another side of the battle, the shattered equipment, dangerous terrain, and Marines continuing forward through the wreckage below. The twisted metal and ammunition casings scattered across the black sand give the photograph an almost immediate battlefield quality, while the Marines walking through the background place the destruction within the continuing fight. With its original handwritten account of the explosion and period Brown Brothers markings still preserved on the reverse, the photograph serves as a striking physical record of the conditions faced on the Iwo Jima beachhead.
