DESCRIPTION

Original 1919 British diplomatic / royal reception invitation issued by The British Ambassador for a reception honoring His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VIII / Duke of Windsor.

The invitation reads in part:

“To have the honour of meeting His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales / The British Ambassador requests the honour of the company of … at a reception / on Thursday evening, November the thirteenth / at half after nine o’clock.”

The handwritten invitees appear to read “Lewis Phelps & Mrs. Phelps” (please examine photograph to confirm handwriting).

This can be firmly dated to November 13, 1919. Prince Edward was in Washington, D.C. that day during his first American visit as Prince of Wales. Contemporary and institutional records document his Washington activities that Thursday, including his visit to Mount Vernon, where he placed a wreath at George Washington's tomb and planted an English yew.

An especially interesting piece of post-WWI Anglo-American diplomatic and British royal history. Edward subsequently became King Edward VIII in 1936, before abdicating the throne later that year.
