Original 1904 Imperial German Army large-format photograph showing approximately 15 German soldiers posed together in a military barracks/stable courtyard.
The large handwritten duty board in the center is especially important because it is dated 1904 and headed:
“Wacht-Dienst” — Guard Duty
The board lists various personnel and assignments associated with the barracks and stable, including entries for Kasernenwache (barracks guard), Stallwache (stable guard) and Stalldienst (stable duty).
Several soldiers wear large work aprons and pose with baskets, buckets, a broom and other stable/barracks equipment. Others wear their full Imperial German military uniforms and distinctive peaked caps. The combination of uniforms, work clothing, equipment and the handwritten duty roster provides an excellent view of everyday German military life during the Kaiserreich period, approximately ten years before the outbreak of WWI.
The photograph is mounted on a large ornate photographer's board and is a nice large size of 12.5x10.5" The reverse carries the original studio marking:
Photogr. Atelier Max Herrmann, Potsdam
Kaiser-Wilhelmstr. 42 am Jägertor
A particularly desirable early Imperial German military photograph due to the clearly dated 1904 duty board, Potsdam photographer, large group of soldiers and detailed military stable/barracks setting.
Condition: Original period photograph mounted on heavy decorative card stock. Photograph remains exceptionally sharp with excellent uniform and equipment detail. Mount has age toning, spotting/foxing, staining and edge/corner wear. Reverse has additional age spotting. Please see photographs for exact condition.
