Fascinating vintage Slice-a-Slice bread slicer from Duncannon, Pennsylvania, an ingenious kitchen gadget designed to turn a standard slice of bread into two thin slices.
The hinged metal slicer opens to accept a slice of bread between its two perforated panels. When closed, the bread is held securely while a knife is guided horizontally between the panels, producing two uniform thin slices. These delicate slices were especially useful for making tea sandwiches, party sandwiches, appetizers, and Melba-style toast.
The slicer is marked “Duncannon PA – Slice-a-Slice” and bears patent information associated with the development of this clever bread-slicing device. The design dates to the late 1930s/early 1940s era.
Measuring approximately 7.5 inches x 5 inches x 1.75 inches when folded, this unusual piece is a wonderful example of inventive mid-20th-century American kitchenware.
An especially fun collectible for fans of vintage kitchen gadgets: a Slice-a-Slice bread slicer is represented in the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History collection among the kitchen equipment used by Julia Child.
