This object is a custom 3D laser-etched crystal corporate award commemorating the completion and official startup ("First Oil") of the Appomattox deepwater oil platform
The Milestone: It marks May 23, 2019, the day production officially started on the platform. The Entity Inside: The intricate 3D design laser-etched inside the crystal block replicates Shell's Appomattox Floating Production System (FPS).
- The Design: Suspended inside the optical crystal block is a highly detailed, sub-surface 3D laser engraving of the massive floating semi-submersible platform hull and topsides.
Fyi: Significance: Located roughly 80 miles offshore Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico, Appomattox is Shell's largest floating platform in the Gulf and was notable for coming online months ahead of schedule and significantly under budget.
These types of high-quality obelisk or house-shaped crystal awards are traditionally commissioned by energy companies (like Shell or its joint venture partners like CNOOC) and given to project engineers, executives, or contract partners to celebrate the successful execution of a major multi-billion-dollar project.
