For your consideration is a large English brass repousse kindling or coal scuttle box. Substantial in size, the box measures approximately 31” in width, 18.5” in depth front to back, and stands 19” high. Beautifully crafted, the wooden box is faced with a decorative hand chased brass exterior covering depicting Dutch colonial figures breaking bread beside the hearth of a fireplace and is surrounded by an elaborate shell and scroll border with Jacobean twist edging. Although its precise age is unknown, it is believed to date to the mid-20th century and is in overall good condition. Areas of moderate oxidation can be found to the back of each side that has given way to mild decay and some jagged/worn edges at the rear base area on the sides. Tarnish can be seen in the crevices and deep recesses of the brass which would likely polish away with gentle persistence over time if desired. Otherwise the brass is in beautiful condition and polishes to a brilliant luster. The interior of the box is clean, appearing as if it may not have been used for its intended purpose, but has likely stored other items in the past. The lid fits properly and the hinges operate as intended. Wear is commensurate to age and history of use so please regard the photos as they form a descriptive part of the listing. One of the larger and better examples of its type that we’ve seen, it presents itself well and is ideal for use as a home decor piece if desired.
