I have worked with the top restores in the country to develop this paint. We have taken factory pieces that have not been heat cycled and match the color off of several different cars to get this color. No Easy task. Scott Tieman of Super Car Specialties helped in the research and has been a great help to this project. His restorations are second to none.
This is a solid enamel sky blue color (no Metallic) but there are a few versions or shades of the color. We have documented many cars and NOW have the correct sky blue for the 58-65 Pontiac cars and with out a doubt it is the most correct color on the market. This color was used from 1958-65 ONLY. Some say it is also 71 and up but that is simply not true. The 71 and up colors while are a solid color are nowhere close to this color. We have made that color also, it is in another listing.
This is custom made and put into a spray can so it is easy to use. It generally takes 2 cans to cover the entire engine but it is possible to get the job done with one can if the engine has base color close to the final color. Good to 300 degrees,
From the factory these engines had very little paint on them and there were many bare spots and light spots. the bottom of the oil pan was a dusting but the valve covers were usually pretty nice since that is all that you saw.
We do a ton of research on our paint colors so they are as accurate as the factory. There is a lot of conflicting information on the internet and some is right but getting to the bottom of it is nearly impossible.
1. There is no correct cheap paint on the market, that is why it is cheap. Cheap = Wrong.
2. Most of these engines were made in several plants with different manufactures of the original paints so there are many shades that are considered the same color. We pick the most common shade. After paint heats up and cools down a thousand times the color changes or burns off. So to find a correct color we use only parts that are original and that have not been heat cycled.
3. Most companies can lower the cost of the paint by putting less paint in the can and more propellant (Compressed Air) So while you think you are getting paint it is mostly air and that is why with cheap paint it takes so many coats. When paint flashes off very fast it is mostly propellant.
