Beeline Drag strip in Phoenix,Arizona, hosted the Second AnnualFuel and Gas Drag Bike Nationals.This track is sanctioned by the Amer-ican Hot Rod Association, and thesame organization was responsiblefor the two-day event. It started withthe track opening on Friday at 4:00p.m. for tech inspection, with recordruns and qualifying scheduled to be-gin at five. It was to be the begin-ning of this writer’s education inhow NOT to run a major racingevent.As with most drag races therewere very few (few meaning maybe100) spectators in attendance on Fri-day. The track was in terrible shape,traction-wise, the first day becauseit isn’t used more than twice amonth, so just about every raceraround was trying to find the bite.Not much happened until around5:30, when a rather strange sound-ing two-stroke motor lit off at thestarting line, did an incredibly longburnout, and ripped off a mid-ll-sec-ond funny car-style run. It was Har-lon Bice with his snowmobile-pow-ered Yamaha digger. Roger Davisalso had one, and both bikes werebizarre, to say the least. The crewswould roll them up to the startingline, fire them with a rope just likeyou’d light off your lawnmower, andmake a one-gear-only pass. The mo-tors are only 650cc small, but theypull 150 horsepower out of the crate,and have a centrifugal funny car-style slipper clutch which allows themotor to run high gear only.The big problem with both of thebikes is the type of powerplantthey use. According to the other(N.H.R.A., A.M.D.R.A.) sanctioningbodies, drag bikes must retain pro-duction motorcycle engine cases.Since there aren’t a whole lot of two-wheeled snowmobiles around, it ap-pears that these two machines willonly be able to run exhibition racesand A.H.R.A.-sanctioned tracks.Sometime during the last fewmonths A.H.R.A. decided to starta “Funny Bike” class, just like theone for cars. In order to qualify forthe class, the rules say that the framemust appear stock, you must havefront and rear lights, front and rearfenders, stock appearing tank, anda more-or-less standard seat. Therewere a few bikes that showed set upto run the new class, but because ofits newness only two showed anyclass.Ray Price was one, and talk aboutimpressive. He had a 107-cubic-inchfuel-burning (fuel is also legal in theclass) Sportster engine stuffed in a12353-7307-14
